THE REGION

Sibas is located in Söke which is a town and a large district of Aydın Province in the Aegean region of western Turkey, 54 km south-west of the city of Aydın, near the Aegean coast.

Söke is an Aegean town which homes to unprecedented natural beauties, mithology and history. In Aegean, as Herodotus named it saying “the cradle of civilizations having the most convenient climate in the most beautiful sky we ever know on earth”, you have the opportunity to see the remnants of  ancient kingdoms as well as those of Rome side by side, enjoy the sea and sandy beaches stretching along the the seaside and discover hidden inlets. The district lies between the Aegean coast and the edge of the fertile alluvial plain of the Büyük Menderes River.

The plain contains much rich agricultural land, one of Turkey's largest cotton growing areas and also important for wheat and flour. Other income comes from handicrafts, forestry and fishing, and Turkey's only exporter of culinary snails. There is little industry or technology. The weather is very hot in summer. The Aegean region is rich in history and natural beauty and Söke is a large town right in the centre of it, the market town at the heart of a wealthy agricultural district, with a dramatic backdrop of mountains.

Bafa Lake : The lake used to be a gulf of the Aegean Sea until the Classical period, when the sea passage was gradually closed by the alluvial mass brought by Büyük Menderes River. The gulf, and later the lake, was named Latmus in antiquity. The southern shore of the lake is traced by the highway connecting İzmir-Kuşadası-Söke to towns such as Milas and Bodrum that are situated in the south. The northern shore of the lake, where steep slopes are covered by wild or semi-domesticated olive trees, is virtually untouched to this day.
Ephesus-The Virgin Mary :
Selçuk, where the remnants of ancient Ephesus exist, is 80 kms from İzmir. The shrine of Virgin Mary, regarded as being among holy places for Christians, is visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year. The ancient theatre in Ephesus hosts various concerts during the summer time as well as being one of  the outstanding examples of common cultural heritage.
Kuşadası :
Functioning as a centre to the important touristic resorts and cities such as İzmir, Efes (Ephesus, the shrine of Virgin Mary), Milet, Didim and Pamukkale, Kuşadası is thought to have been founded by Ionians in the name of  Neopolis, a settlement of Ephesus.
